In St Paul de Vence, a pétanque ball lands with a crack against the gravel before you lift a chilled French aperitif to the afternoon. Walk beneath Carcassonne’s towers and along its fortified walls, running your hand over stone that has stood for centuries. While, through the Dordogne, you pass wooded slopes, farm fields and villages laid out along the river.
