Christmas in Finland is for families who want the season without the rush. Based at Hotel Kalevala in Kajaani, in the lake and forest country south of Lapland, this is a quieter, more traditional kind of festive holiday, away from the busier Christmas resorts.
Days are gentle and unhurried. Children can feed reindeer, take a sleigh ride through the snow and meet Santa, while the hotel's own kick-sledging tracks and playrooms mean there is plenty to do without going far. On Christmas Eve, the day Finns celebrate, you gather for a traditional Finnish Christmas dinner, the authentic centre of a Finnish Christmas.
It is an easy, comfortable base for a family Christmas: everything close at hand, time to slow down, and a genuine sense of how the season is marked in Finland.
